From the CEO: That question

How often do you get that question? When asked, “What exactly is ACN?” how do you explain the value of an accountable care organization to your practice and to your patients? Here’s a simple, patient-focused description of who we are and our value in the marketplace:

People are asking for a better healthcare system. This means access to great doctors who deliver high quality care, better coordination among providers, and a way to manage the rising cost of care.

Arizona Care Network is a group of 5,000 interdependent clinicians who are so committed to these high standards they are willing to be reimbursed based on the quality of their outcomes and satisfaction of their patients. ACN offers the technology tools and clinical support that help them deliver this high level of quality and service. And because high quality care is cost efficient care, everyone wins.

Thanks to your collective focus and effort, we’ve had some good wins during 2017:

  • Great work by providers to meet the metrics of value-based contracts, enabling us to make significant progress on the quadruple aim
  • Specifically, ACN’s Aetna and UnitedHealthcare contracts are on the right path for shared savings distributions to providers
  • We continue to improve the scope and effectiveness of our governance, thanks to the leadership of a dedicated Board of Managers and with the commitment and expertise of committee chairs, members and each of you. I’m delighted to work alongside Dr. Linda Brown and her board this year.
  • Our mission has attracted talented new leadership in key areas. Read below to meet Dr. Ed Clarke, who joined ACN in March as Chief Medical Officer. We were also joined in April by Debra Stevens in the role of Executive Director of Marketing and Communication.

We are dedicated to serving you and supporting your achievement of the quadruple aim and making it easier for you to practice value-based medicine. If there is any way ACN can better assist you, please let us know.

Congratulations ACN Top Docs

Each year, Phoenix Magazine recognizes Top Docs across 57 specialties, as voted by their peers. This year, 238 ACN providers were honored with the Top Doc designation. Congratulations!

Ed Clarke, MD, Joins ACN as Chief Medical Officer

As the next step in its strategic development, Arizona Care Network has named Dr. Ed Clarke, a primary care physician with deep experience leading clinically integrated health networks, as chief medical officer.

Dr. Clarke is responsible for the clinical performance of the 5,000-clinician network and will partner with members to achieve the quadruple aim of improving the quality of patient care, managing the cost of care, enhancing the overall patient experience and improving clinician satisfaction.

He served in a similar role for the 1,500-provider Banner Medical Group in Arizona and Colorado, and before that as a physician informaticist. He is board certified in Family Medicine, with additional certification in Sports Medicine.

“Dr. Clarke has a successful track record of partnering with physicians to achieve transformational improvements in patient care,” said Dr. David Hanekom.

In his new role, Clarke will lead improvements to the network’s infrastructure, including new technology tools to improve quality, safety, service, and satisfaction. Under his direction, ACN also will introduce a new care management program tailored to patients’ conditions and risk factors, and provide a comprehensive and actionable scorecard to help physicians track their performance.

“Physicians are being asked to practice healthcare in new and different ways based on government programs, changes to the payer landscape and patient expectations,” Dr. Clarke said. “I look forward to working hand-in-hand with them to make navigating a complex environment easier and more effective.”

Board Approves PIP for 2017

Primary care providers participating in ACN’s Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP and the Next Generation ACO (NGACO) have the opportunity to earn a collective $2 million in performance incentives for 2017 for improving clinical excellence and care coordination within the network

While this Provider Incentive Program (PIP) is for those responsible for the 35,000 Medicare lives covered under these programs, ACN specialists also benefit from the metric rewarding in-network care coordination, which drives referrals.

Details were sent directly to eligible PCPs; please contact your Provider Network Consultant at providers@azcarenetwork.org if you need another copy of that communication.

Bright Health Coming in 2018; Credentialing Underway Now

ACN will be the exclusive provider network for Bright Health’s Medicare Advantage Plan in Maricopa County beginning in 2018, giving patients a new plan option to choose during open enrollment. This represents an excellent opportunity to attract new patients to the network and your practice.

Credentialing is underway through Aperture Credentialing, LLC, which must access each provider’s Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH) profile. Details were distributed in April; you can find a copy here.

ACN, PCCN Debut Arizona Mother-Baby Care

ACN, along with Phoenix Children's Care Network (PCCN) recently announced the launch of Arizona Mother-Baby Care, a new maternal/fetal service line governed by the ACN Pediatric Chapter Committee. Arizona Mother-Baby Care offers concierge-style care that combines the unique expertise of specialists around Arizona to provide exceptional services for mother and baby. The program utilizes evidence-based treatment protocols to guarantee a greater patient experience while also focusing on reduction in preterm delivery and superior quality outcomes.

The program is led by two well-known and respected physicians. Dr. John Elliott, Medical Director, is an internationally recognized authority in maternal-fetal medicine, specializes in the care of high-risk mothers. Dr. Kathleen van Leeuwen, Surgical Director, will oversee the network’s team of surgeons in the treatment of high-risk mothers and their babies, and will ensure the smooth transition of newborns to pediatric subspecialists when needed.
